It used to be that bathrooms and kitchens were the only tiled rooms of a typical house, but more and more people are discovering the classy look of a tiled floor. There is less carpet in the average home than ever before, and many people are tiling their living rooms, dining rooms, and other rooms of the house. Before you begin installing ceramic tile, however, there are a few things you need to know.
The first thing you need to decide is whether you want to tile the floor only, or whether you'd like to do the full or partial wall in addition to the floors.
There is a difference between floor tiles and wall tiles, although they may look roughly the same. In a project where you are doing both the floors and the walls, plan to do the walls first.

The first thing to do is strip the current flooring down to the subfloor. Make sure it has a sturdy surface that does not flex when you walk on it. For each tile, spread adhesive with a trowel and lay it down. Tile looks best when you start in the middle of the room so you can center the tile.

After laying all the whole tiles that will fit in the room, you'll need to cut the rest and put them around the outside of the room. There are a variety of methods for cutting ceramic tile, including tile nippers, a tile saw, or a wet saw.

Between all tiles you'll need to place spacers as you install them. After all tile is down, remove the spacers and pour grout into the spaces. Let it cure for a week before applying sealant to it. This will keep your grout from becoming discolored or dirty in appearance.
